Warning: Feels Ahead.
The oldest of our two cats hasn’t been doing well for a few weeks now. She’s lost a ton of weight over the past year and has been stone deaf for almost 3 years. It was never an issue of quality of life. Shoot, with three boys under the age of 8 in the house, I think the deafness was a blessing for her.
This morning around 3 AM, the younger of the cats came into our room and meowed enough to wake us up. Usually, at that time of night, it’s to alert us that he is proud of a mouse he caught, or similar. This time, he went to the place the older cat sleeps and we found her not doing well. She died minutes later.
19.5 years. Long time. I’ve known her for 11.
Yesterday for the first time in ~6 years she wanted to go outside to sit in the sun. My wife sent me the picture posted here and said, “This is different.”
I think she just wanted one more good day.
My 5-year-old asked if he could plant flowers where we buried her. That broke my heart.
Godspeed, Keyser.

Yeah, I’m “fine” it’s the kids that are hurting really, which then make me feel bad, haha. So it’s circuitous for my feelings.

19.5 is good long life for a cat. Still sucks I know but I lost my favorite cat 8 years ago and she was only 9. Still stings to this day.

Awwwww...I can’t believe my allergies are still acting up. Sounds like your son already understands pretty well. Those are hard conversations to have, but to loosely paraphrase Louis CK in a more positive light, pets help us emotionally prepare for the more painful losses down the road. My folks had to put our cat down a couple years ago at age 18 or 19. The last few years were tough.

You didn’t lie about those feels. I love cats. But I guess it’s good that she had a long life and a peaceful end. Have a virtual manly Oppo hug.

George Carlin said something like, “pets are furry little tragedies waiting to happen.” We have 3 cats. They’re 9, 12 and 14. Hopefully we’ve got several more years before we have any tragedies. The youngest is my cat who I had before I got together with my fiancee, and while I’m sure I’ll be bothered by her 2 cats going, I know I’ll be a ball of mush when it’s my little dude’s time.

I’m so sorry. My parents lost the cat that I grew up with while I was on my way back from a ski trip. It really tore me apart not being able to say goodbye.

Argh. I’m so sorry for your loss.
My kitty is only around a year old, so I know he’s still got a good run ahead of him, but I dread that inevitable day. :(
I'm glad you got to spend so much time with her. I'm sure she loved you guys.

Lol, also my wife was able to procure a cheep keg-orator from her boss. It can take quarter kegs and it’s sitting next to the Land Rover. Probably a bad idea to have it right there but oh well.

Yep. My grandpa will be turning 90 this September and is on his tenth year surviving cancer and a pretty aggressive treatment regimen that he has never been 100% after. He is a lot of the reason I am proud of my last name, and why I teach my boys about their family. I am dreading the eventuality.

Yeah, our youngest cat my wife got as a kitten around when we started dating. I want to say he’s 11, but I’d have to think about it. He was very jealous of the furlough Keyser received yesterday on the deck.

She was the curmudgeonly cat, so she really liked my wife, used me and tolerated the children, haha. Having been by my wife’s side prior to the rest of us, she was the old-money to our nouveau-riche.

Right in the feels, my mom and dad just lost their 18 year old over the weekend due to kidney failure. Our 19 year old tortoise shell Calico is going deaf, losing weight, and getting the old kitty coat. But she is incredibly patient with my 19 month old, possibly due to the deaf part of things. I walk downstairs every morning and look over the couch to see if she is still with us.

Keyser was a rescue for my wife. Someone at a job site was going to run over the box of kittens with a forklift when a neighbor of hers stopped the psychopath. The mom had left, so my wife got a kitten way too early in its life. Had to get the formula and such from the vet to make sure she made it.

The first cat I ever owned quite literally died in my arms. I brought her downstairs to try and comfort her in her cat bed and as I was about to set her down she passed away.
I was inconsolable for hours. Sorry about your loss. Losing a beloved pet is never easy. Especially when they’ve been with you for so long.

A three cause circular flow of reasons. You drink because you’re wrenching, you’re wrenching because it’s a Land Rover, The Land Rover needs to work to get more beer.
